GOVERNOR OTTI ASSURES ABIA FARMERS OF GOVERNMENT SUPPORT, FLAGS -OFF INNOVATIVE STRENGTHENING OF SMALL HOLDERS FARMERS
The Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr.Alex Otti OFR has flagged -off the innovative strengtening of small holders farmers initiative of the African Union Development Agency -New Partnership For Africa's Development (AUDA-NEPAD)and assured them of the State Governments support towards the full implementation of the programme.
The Governor who was represented by his Deputy Engr Ikechukwu Emetu at the JAAC Auditorium Umuahia stated that the passion of the present Administration towards the development of Agriculture in order to achieve food security is unequivocable.He announced that Abia which was selected as one of the (7) seven pilot states for the initiative had demonstrated her readiness by fulfilling it's counterpart funding obligation.
The Governor in his words stated
" I want to assure AUDA-NEPAD ,our development partners and especially our farmers that this program will receive the full support of the State Government" s.
Responding,the National coordinator and chief Executive officer of AUDA -NEPAD Hon. Jabiru Salisbury Abdullahi Tsauri represented by Mrs Fatima Ibrahim, explained that the program will help farmers in Abia state to increase food production as well as the economy of the state.
She recommended that the opportunity should be extended to all farmers and enjoined them to work together for the success of the program.
Contributing To the state focal person AUDA- NEPAD and the Hon. Commissioner for Agriculture Dr.Cliff Agbaeze FCIB,said that despite limited responses that over ninety percent of Nigeria farmers operate on small scale farming and yet they feed the nation. He opined that the initiative is designed to support, empower, and uplift small holders farmers through the provision of modern improved inputs , training in Agriculture and climate smart practices to enhance productivity.
He revealed that a total of seventeen thousand small holders farmers are targeted for support across the 17 LGAs of the state starting with the first 1,000 in the pilot phase .He expressed his appreciation to Governor Alex Otti for his unrelented support and his resolve to reposition Abis State towards the path of sustainable growth in all sectors of the economy.
Earlier, the State Project Coordinator of the program,Mrs Osundu Catherine thanked Abia farmers from the 17 LGAs of the state for their resilience and committment. She said that the initiative will give Abia Small holder farmers access to information on modern methods of improving Agricultural production.
In their seprate speeches, the permanent Secretary, Abia state ministry of Agriculture Mrs Ijeoma Adanma Aguwa PhD, the Mayor of Isiukwuator LGA,Mr Chinedu Ekeke,the immediate past National Coordinator and CEO of AUDA- NEPAD and Mrs Princess Gloria Akobundu commended the State Government for his avowed commitment towards improved Agricultural production in the state.
In an interview some farmers , Sir Christian Ahukanna and Elder Monday Chigbu eulogised Governor Alex Otti for facilitating the project in order to achieve food security and availability across the state. They thanked AUDA-NEPAD for partnering with the state government towards empowering Abia farmers through Agricultural value chains.
Other stakeholders, including Chief Charity Ocholu, Mr. Uba Augustine, and Mr. Godwin Chiori, described small-holder farmers as pillars of Agricultural rejuvenation and sustainable development .
The initiative is expected to enhance farm productivity, improve farming practices, and create opportunities for small-holder farmers to improve their living standards.
