Trump Threatens Tariffs on BRICS Nations, Vows to Protect U.S. Dollar and Reject Digital Currency
According to a report by Reuters on Friday, July 18, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday renewed his combative rhetoric toward the BRICS alliance, warning that he would impose harsh tariffs on its member states if the group were to coalesce into a powerful economic bloc. Trump, who is seeking a return to the White House in the 2024 presidential election, made the comments during a campaign stop, reaffirming his protectionist stance on trade and global finance.
Referring to the BRICS nations originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, and recently expanded to include several new members Trump declared that any serious formation of the group would be swiftly dismantled under his leadership.
“When I heard about this group from BRICS six countries, basically I hit them very, very hard,” Trump said. “And if they ever really form in a meaningful way, it will end very quickly.” He did not specify which member states he was referring to, but his remarks appeared to target the group’s recent efforts to create a multipolar global financial system and reduce reliance on the U.S. dollar.
The BRICS alliance has been exploring alternatives to Western-led financial structures, including proposals to establish a shared currency and expand trade in local currencies among member states. These initiatives are seen by some observers as a challenge to U.S. economic dominance.
Trump, however, dismissed the group’s potential influence and reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding the primacy of the U.S. dollar as the world’s reserve currency. “We will always protect the dollar. It is vital to our national strength,” he said.
He also took aim at recent discussions within U.S. financial circles about the possible development of a central bank digital currency (CBDC). Trump vowed to block any such move, which he described as a threat to personal freedom and financial privacy. “I will never allow the creation of a central bank digital currency in America,” he said. “It’s a dangerous step toward government control over your money.”
