Sheriff:How can our governors from an organized party defect to an unorganized party like APC–George
The defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has sparked intense reactions, particularly from senior PDP figures. Among the most vocal critics is former Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, Chief Olabode George, who has expressed deep concern and disappointment over what he views as a betrayal of the party's legacy and principles. The news comes amid increasing reports of covert political alliances forming ahead of the 2027 general elections, with several PDP governors allegedly pledging allegiance to President Bola Tinubu's re-election efforts.
George, a founding member of the PDP, described the defection as a shocking development, especially given the longstanding influence of the party in Delta State since 1999. He condemned both Governor Oborevwori and his predecessor, Ifeanyi Okowa, for abandoning the party that facilitated their rise to power. For George, such moves represent not just political disloyalty but also a troubling shift that threatens the foundational values of multiparty democracy in Nigeria.
According to reports by The SUN, the defection may be part of a larger strategy by the APC and the presidency to consolidate power by coercing opposition governors into submission. George accused the APC leadership of using state machinery to intimidate PDP governors into switching sides, warning that this could lead Nigeria dangerously close to a one-party state. He argued that if Oborevwori could no longer represent the PDP faithfully, then he should resign from office rather than exploit the mandate of a party he no longer supports.
George’s frustration extended beyond the Delta State situation to the broader issue of anti-party activities among PDP heavyweights. He criticized the continued political flirtations of figures like Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the FCT, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who have been seen engaging with prominent APC personalities. George emphasized that such actions erode the unity and credibility of the PDP, making it harder to position the party as a viable alternative in future elections.
The PDP stalwart also expressed disapproval over Atiku's recent political meeting with former President Muhammadu Buhari, interpreting it as an act of disloyalty to the party. George argued that alliances with political figures outside the party, especially those linked with the APC, amount to a betrayal of the PDP’s mission and undermine efforts to present a united front. He called for those engaging in such conduct to either fully commit to the party or make a clean break.
According to him, "How can our governors from an organized party defect to an unorganized party like APC with only two people, Tinubu and Ganduje , dictatorially controlling the party."
