Labour Party Still Strong, Ready for the Next Chapter - Hon Obi Aguocha

Abuja, Nigeria –

Following the recent Supreme Court judgment affecting the Labour Party’s (LP) national leadership, Hon. Obi Aguocha, Member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has reaffirmed his loyalty to the party and called for unity, resilience, and strategic repositioning.

Speaking in a recent interview on Arise Television, Aguocha dismissed fears of mass defection or internal collapse within the LP. He described the party as “strong and focused,” despite the leadership controversies.

“First and foremost, it’s Labour for life for me. We are not dwindling. We have 30 members in the House of Representatives. Yes, five have defected, but that’s only 10 percent. The remaining 90 percent are still committed to the work of the Labour Party—not just in the House, but in the Senate as well,” Aguocha said.

He emphasized that the recent legal ruling does not alter the party’s collective determination to move forward.

When asked about the implications of the Supreme Court judgment, Aguocha responded, “I have not seen the Certified True Copy (CTC) myself, but from the audio of the judgment, the implication is clear. Julius Abure was recognized by INEC through a court order, and now the Supreme Court has set that order aside. Legally speaking, that means he is no longer the chairman.”

However, Aguocha stressed that the ultimate decisions regarding party leadership and direction lie within the internal mechanisms of the party itself.

“This is not just about individuals; it’s about the soul and future of our party. We must use this moment as a turning point for sober reflection, reform, and recommitment to our ideals,” he stated.

His comments came on the heels of a recent National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Labour Party, where the presidential candidate of the party in the 2023 elections, Mr. Peter Obi, addressed members on the urgent need to rebuild and reposition the party for future success.

Obi, while speaking at the NEC meeting, lamented the worsening state of the nation, stating that Nigeria is collapsing under the weight of poor leadership and economic hardship. He decried the increasing rate of poverty, where many citizens now resort to begging just to survive.

He further declared that, going forward, only committed and loyal party members, “not political passers-by”, would be allowed to contest elections under the LP platform.
“We must rebuild this party on integrity, strength, and consistency,” Obi said.

Aguocha echoed this sentiment in his remarks, noting that the Labour Party remains the beacon of hope for millions of Nigerians who believed in its vision during the 2023 general elections.

“We know that millions believed in us. They came out en masse, voted for us, and supported a vision that represented change and hope. That spirit was betrayed when the presidential mandate was rigged against us. But we’re not abandoning the cause. We owe it to those Nigerians to rebuild this party, to take responsibility, and to prepare it for a stronger, more credible future,” he concluded.
