It Is Impossible To Name A Country That Has Developed Under Democracy" - Burkina Faso Leader

According to a report by The VANGUARD, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the interim leader of Burkina Faso, has dismissed the idea that democracy is essential for development.

Speaking during a flag-raising ceremony at Koulouba Palace, Traoré stated that no country has developed solely under a democratic system. He argued that it is false to believe democracy is a prerequisite for development.

Traoré explained that Burkina Faso follows a "popular, progressive revolution" rather than a democratic model. He emphasized that his country is not practicing democracy but a revolution, asserting that democracy does not fit into Burkina Faso's current framework. According to him, while people may feel free to speak and act as they wish, it ultimately leads to disorder in society.

The 37-year-old military leader took power in a coup in September 2022, overthrowing interim president Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba. Traoré’s comments reflect his belief that revolutionary change is necessary for Burkina Faso's progress. He rejected the notion that democracy has a direct connection to development, stating that democracy is only a result, not the cause of a country's progress.

“It is impossible to name a country that has developed in democracy. Democracy is only the result,” Traoré said.

Traoré’s remarks come amidst growing discontent in Africa with democratic systems and increasing support for military-led governance. His statement highlights the ongoing debate about the effectiveness of democracy in fostering economic and social development across the continent.
