Obasanjo asks Fubara to Shut Down Rivers Assembly and Declare State of Emergency Amid Political Crisis

In a significant development amid the ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has reportedly counseled Governor Siminalayi Fubara to take firm control of the situation. Suggestions include shutting down the State House of Assembly and declaring a state of emergency if required.

During a private meeting at the Government House in Port Harcourt, Obasanjo allegedly emphasized the need for Governor Fubara to assert his authority as the elected Chief Security Officer of the state. He cautioned the governor against yielding to external political pressures.

“You are the governor, chosen by the people. You hold the position of Chief Security Officer in Rivers State. Your directives must stand—neither Tinubu nor Wike placed you in power,” Obasanjo was said to have remarked.

He further advised Fubara to withdraw security details assigned to Assembly members, dismantle opposing political factions, and eliminate any locations designated for impeachment proceedings.

Obasanjo also reportedly warned the governor against adopting “U.S.-style politics in a lawless environment,” urging him to act decisively to protect his mandate.

Political analysts suggest that the former president’s visit and his strong recommendations could signal a pivotal moment in the escalating conflict between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. This development may also intensify tensions with the federal government as the 2027 elections approach.
