Wrestling World Mourns the Loss of Rey Misterio Sr.


The wrestling world is in mourning following the passing of legendary luchador Rey Misterio Sr., born Miguel Angel Lopez Dias, at the age of 66. According to reports from The Guardian, his death was confirmed by his son, El Hijo de Rey Misterio (Miguel Aarón Lopez Hernández), who shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook on Friday, December 20.

“Friends and family, I regret to inform you that my Father, Miguel Ángel López Días, Rey Misterio Sr., passed away this morning…I will keep you informed. Thank you,” his post read in Spanish. The cause of death has not yet been disclosed.

Adding to the tributes, Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, a renowned Mexican wrestling company, expressed their sorrow in a statement: “We mourn the sensitive passing of Miguel Ángel López Días, known as Rey Misterio Sr. We send our deepest condolences to your loved ones and lift our prayers to heaven for your eternal rest.”

Rey Misterio Sr. was an iconic figure in the world of professional wrestling, leaving an indelible mark on the sport. As the uncle of WWE superstar Rey Mysterio and the great uncle of WWE wrestler Dominik Mysterio, his legacy spans generations. Dominik paid tribute to his late great-uncle by sharing images of him on Instagram with a simple, heartfelt caption: “:black_heart:.”

This loss is especially difficult for the family, as Rey Misterio Sr.’s brother and Rey Misterio’s father, Roberto Gutierrez, passed away just a month earlier at the age of 76.

Misterio Sr.'s journey into wrestling began in 1976 after he initially pursued a careerin boxing. His transition into the ring would see him achieve great success over the next several decades. He competed for prominent promotions like Tijuana Wrestling, World Wrestling Association (WWA), Pro Wrestling Revolution, and Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide.

One of his most significant international milestones came in 1990 when he represented Mexico at World Championship Wrestling’s Starrcade, participating in the “Pat O’Connor Memorial International Cup” alongside wrestling icon Konnan.Throughout his career, Rey Misterio Sr. amassed numerous titles, including the Revolution Tag Team Championship (which he won with his son), the IWC World Middleweight Championship, and the WWA World Junior Light Heavyweight Championship.


Beyond his achievements inside the ring, Rey Misterio Sr. was also a mentor who helped shape the careers of wrestling legends like Konnan, Psicosis, Damian 666, and Halloween. He played a vital role in training his nephew, Rey Misterio, who would go on to become one of WWE’s most celebrated performers.

Rey Misterio Sr.'s death marks the end of an era in lucha libre, and his impact will be felt for generations to come.
